Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Week Ending August 14, 2003
Hi Folks,
Amazing what a few days without rain will do. The water is warming and starting to clear up. Inshore fishing is still spotty, but improving everyday. The big story is still the king mackerel and mahi fishing offshore.
Here's my report: Week Ending August 14, 2003:
Inshore: Good but spotty catches of flounder, red drum, black drum and sheepshead are coming to the dock. You have to work a little harder and maybe fish a little longer, moving around, but the fish are there. Good schools of finger mullet are cruising the waterway and creeks. Plenty of menhaden are around too.
Nearshore: The spanish mackerel bite is really taking off. And the fish are big. Fishing clarkspoons at various depths works best. Most action seems to be in 40-60 feet of water.
Offshore: King mackerel and mahi are biting well from 18 to 30 miles out. An occasional sailfish will hit a skipped ballyhoo too...or a live menhaden for that matter.
Gulfstream: No report.
