Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week Ending October 1, 2003
Hi Folks,
It's October, the temperatures are cooling nicely and the fishing is picking up...just like fall fishing should. What a wonderful month to be on the water. Water temps in the inshore waters are around 72 and just off the beach 74-76. Just perfect for many varieties of fishes. Now here's my report:
For the Week Ending October 1, 2003:
Inshore: Water cooling down and fishing heating up fast. As soon as we got through the astronomical high tides over the weekend, the fishing started biting. We are catching nice red drum and flounder on live bait in the inlets, the waterways and the creeks. A few specks have made an appearance. I try to fish Masonboro Inlet, weather permitting, at night on the full moon in October...often some of the best trout fishing of the year.
Nearshore: The spanish mackerel are still hanging around and while they are still sporadic (they have been all year), they are good size fish. Mixed in with the spanish are some nice bluefish. AND the false albacore are starting to show up.
Offshore: Good catches of king mackerel from 10 to 25 miles out are the main attraction. Both live bait and trolled cigar minnows and ballyhoo work well.
Gulfstream: The tuna action is starting, with both yellowfin and blackfin action available. Mahi add to the mix as well as some wahoo.
This is the time of the year when almost everything is biting somewhere and sometimes its is harder to decide what to fish for than to actually catch the fish. So make that decision and go catch some fish.
