Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week Ending May 10, 2004
Report for the Week Ending May 10, 2004:
Hi Everyone,
Fishing is hot!!! The spanish have turned on in big numbers and big size. The flounder have started their bite as have the red drum. Small spring kings are near shore. To sum up, name it and the fish are biting somewhere.
Here's my Report:
Inshore: The baitfish (menhaden) have moved in and are in abundant numbers. Flounder catches near the inlets are very good and will only get better in the days ahead. Red and black drum fishing is good too...particularly on the falling tide. A few sheepshead are being caught as well.
Nearshore: Spanish and more spanish...trolling, sight casting and jigging. Bluefish are still chomping and they are very good size. A few bonito are hanging around but don't expect them to be here much longer. Small kings are biting near the inshore artificial reefs on trolled clarkspoons.
Offshore: King mackerel are moving around in the 20 to 35 mile areas and the BIG bluefish are working the 20-25 mile areas.
Gulfstream: There is hot action on tuna, wahoo, mahi and some billfish too.
If you have a chance to go fishing get on the water. The weather is perfect and the fish are biting...the peak of the spring!
