Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Period Ending June 21, 2004
Hi Folks,
Fishing has been very good in all but one category. The large flounder that appeared just a few weeks ago seem to have scattered out and have become difficult to find. Hopefully that will change soon. We have had good catches of red drum, spanish mackerel and the king mackerel and mahi are hot too. Now here's my report:
Period Ending June 21, 2004:
Inshore: Plenty of smaller flounder are being caught while the doormats are avoiding us. Red drum are being caught in good numbers. Best baits have been live menhaden for the flounder and fresh chunks of big menhaden for the drum.
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are providing plenty of action for those so inclined. Large schools of menhaden patrolling the beach have attracted cobia and even a few tarpon have been cited. Cobia from 30 to 75 pounds have been caught.
Offshore: Mahi fishing is tops on the list right now. Good catches of mahi are being had from 10 to 30 miles. Plenty of king mackerel are available and cobia are biting as well at the offshore artificial reefs. Best bait is live menhaden with ballyhoo working well also. A few sailfish are showing up and look for that action to improve as we have our usual run of sails in July.
Gulfstream: The hot action is tuna, wahoo and mahi. Billfish action has been good as well.
Fishing action is solid right now, so get out on the water and enjoy the fun.
