Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Period Ending June 28, 2004
Hi Folks,
Is it hot enough for you? I got rained out today so I thought I would try to bring everybody up to date as we head to the July 4th weekend. Fishing has been good to great in almost every category. This week we have caught red drum, spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and mahi. We didn't try for any flounder, but feel sure there are some around...tip: the big flounder are on the nearshore artificial reefs.
Now here's my report:
Period Ending June 28, 2004:
Inshore: We are still having good catches of red drum using menhaden, dead or alive for bait. Smaller flounder are in the creeks, waterway and inlets, while the bigger fish are on the nearshore artificial reefs. Best baits are live menhaden or finger mullet (which have finally made their appearance).
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are around in good numbers. Be careful to throw back the small kings mixed in with the spanish. The minimum size for king mackerel is 24 inches and there are a bunch out there in the 18 to 23 inch range.
Offshore: Good size king mackerel and a few mahi are being caught in the 10-12 mile areas. More mahi and some sailfish action can be found in the 20-25 mile range. Live menhaden, cigar minnows and ballyhoo are the preferred baits.
Gulfstream: Action seems to be slowing a bit as we hit the heat of the summer. Yet, good catches of mahi, and a few tuna and wahoo can still be had in the stream.
Summer is almost half over and the July 4th holiday is upon us. I urge everyone to be safe this weekend. There will be a lot of boats on the water and let's hope everyone acts responsibly.
