Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Period Ending August 1, 2004

Hi Folks,

Greetings from tropical storm central. It is a local laugh when Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel comes here we are in for trouble and of course he is here. Fortunately, I think we will come through this one named Alex with just a brush, some rain and wave action, but hopefully no real damage. The bad news is the flounder fishing in the ocean was the best I have ever seen it and I hope that they are still there when Alex moves out to sea. On the other hand it may drive the flounder inshore. We'll see.

Now here's my report: Period Ending August 1, 2004:

Inshore: Some nice flounder are being caught at the inlets and in the creeks. Puppy drum are also at the inlets, the ICW docks and creeks. Best baits are live menhaden and finger mullet. Sheepshead and black drum are biting around pier pilings on sand fleas and fiddler crabs.

Nearshore: A tremendous bite of nice flounder is going on at the inshore artificial reefs. Best baits are fairly large menhaden and finger mullet. In 2 trips last week we caught 23 flounder and 11 were citation size with the biggest being near 8 pounds. Spanish mackerel are also biting well.

Offshore: King mackerel are biting from 4 to 30 miles with bigger fish being found near structure...artificial or natural. Mahi are being caught from 10 to 30 miles out on ballyhoo, live cigar minnows and live menhaden. Plenty of barracuda are around so don't waste anytime getting your fish to the boat...and in it!

Gulfstream: Mahi is the main fish right now, but some wahoo and billfish are adding to the action. Look for action to heat up as the weather cools down.

Fall fishing is just around the corner, and I for one am looking forward to some cooler weather and some good fishing.
