Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

October 3, 2004
Hi Folks,
Well the temps are still a bit warm, but the cool I hear is on the way and the fish for the most part are biting. The highlight of my week was the catch and release of two 60+ pound red drum on separate days. One was 48 inches and the second was 50 inches...now those are big reds.
Inshore: Plenty of puppy drum, blues, flounder and some specks are being caught. A lot of the action is at the inlets, but fish are being caught in the ICW and the creeks as well. If you fish the bridges and pilings, there are some good bites on sheepshead and black drum.
Nearshore: Good action on gray trout and flounder at the artificial and natural nearshore reefs. Float a live bait behind the boat and catch a king...(we caught a 17 pounder on spin tackle this week). Some nice catches of king macks in close along with some very large spanish mackerel have been reported. The king we caught wasn't more than 3/4 mile off the beach. Good schools of false albacore are showing up too.
Offshore: King mackerel are being caught from the beach out to 40 miles. Best bait is live menhaden, but dead baits will work too.
Gulfstream: The stream is producing good catches of wahoo, tuna and mahi. A few bill fish are still in the area too.
This is the time of year to definitely go fishing. Please don't miss the monster red pic of the week: www.rodmancharters.com
