Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 5, 2005
Report May 5, 2005:
Hi Folks,
Fishing is heating up fast. If the weather would cooperate, everything would be great. High winds and also rain have shortened just about every week this spring and this weekend looks like another blow.Hopefully the weather will ease up so we can get out and catch some of these hungry fish.
Inshore: Water temperatures have risen to the mid 60's and the red and black drum are biting well. A few trout and an occasional flounder can be thrown into the mix. Best baits are fresh shrimp and artificials like Berkley Gulp have worked well too.
Nearshore: The bonito arrived in large numbers this week. We caught eight on lite spinning tackle Monday, along with a few dozen nice blues and one gray trout. A few spanish have been caught which is a great sign that action is getting better fast.
Offshore: Kings are still a good ride out...20- 25 miles, but should be moving in as water temps moderate. Bottom fishing in the 10 to 20 mile range has been good, especially for sea bass.
Gulfstream: The few boats that have gotten out this week have caught tuna and wahoo. Let the wind lay and the catches will be better.
This has undoubtedly been the toughest spring I have endured and many of you have had to reschedule and sometimes reschedule again. It has been very frustrating for me and you, but the calmer days of May and June are close at hand...so hope is on the next horizon.
