Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 15, 2005

Report July 15, 2005

Hi Folks,

Fishing is really good now...in-between dodging raindrops. But, seriously when the weather is fishable we are catching the fish. Good catches of flounder, spanish and kings are common, and the mahi have moved within range on pretty days as well.

Now here's my report:

Inshore: Flounder continue to provide good action. The fish do not seem to be as big this year, but there seem to be more of them. Best caught on live bait fished on carolina rigs in and near inlets, the waterway and snows cut. Red drum are around too, again the inlets seem to be the best fishing spots.

Nearshore: Plenty of spanish mackerel are biting with some small kings mixed in with them...be sure to watch the size limit for kings (minimum 24"). Also, a few tarpon have shown near the inlets and the piers.

Offshore: King mackerel are biting from 5 to 18 miles out. Mahi are biting in the 18 to 25 mile range. Amberjack and 'cudas can be found at most of the artificial reefs.

Gulfstream: Wahoo, mahi and tuna are biting and billfish are complimenting the mix.

A lot of folks have been asking about next years Rod-Man Fishing School. Plans are almost complete and a full announcement will be made in the next few weeks. This year's school will be a bit bigger and a lot better. It is scheduled for March 4, 2006. Again, details to come soon.

A few weeks back I mentioned I had acquired a set of Okuma VS40 spinning reels. I and my customers have been using the reels daily and the jury is in; they are the smoothest working reels I have ever used. Sixteen (that's right 16) ball bearings make these reels just super and a pleasure to fish. I got mine at Bug-Em Bait, 6006 Oleander Drive in Wilmington, 910-452-9955...check them out.

Lot's of good fishing ahead for the summer and then the always looked for fall fishing begins. Make plans to get on the water and enjoy the action. Please don't miss this week's pic of the week: http://www.rodmancharters.com
