Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report: July 21, 2005
Report July 21, 2005:
Hi Folks,
Is it hot enough for you??? Even with the heat the fishing has been just about as hot. Spanish mackerel have been providing quite a bit of action off the beach and red drum and flounder action has been good too.
Now here's my report:
Inshore: Flounder are biting in the inlets and waterways as well as the river. Red drum are biting as well in many of the same areas. Best baits are live menhaden and finger mullet, fished on a carolina rig. Sheephead fishing near the bridge pilings has been good as well. As a bonus there have been some nice gray trout around too.
Nearshore: The spanish have taken over. All along the beach spanish are biting clarkspoons on #1 planers. Try using 25# mono leader 30-35 feet long and a 00 clarkspoon.
King mackerel are biting early in the mornings in the 5 to 25 mile areas. Live bait works best, but cigar minnows will get them as well. Mahi are around in the 10 to 25 mile spots. Barracuda can be caught on spinning tackle using tube lures over the artificial reefs.
Offshore: Again, king mackerel and mahi head the action. Large amberjack are around the AR's 10 miles and further out. They like live bait. Sailfish are making an appearance in the 20+mile range.
Gulfstream: Wahooooooooooooooo! and mahi and billfish are the stream attractions.
