Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Report: August 25, 2005

Report: August 25, 2005

Hi Folks,

Wow some actually cooler weather has arrived and with that the flounder and drum are stirring a bit more, or should I say biting? Spanish mackerel continue to show up in large numbers along the beach. Kings and mahi are biting a little further out.

Inshore: Flounder and red drum are being caught in the inlets, the waterway and the creeks on live bait. Menhaden or mullet will do the trick.

Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are plentiful. You can cast to them with jigs when they school on top or troll with clarkspoons. Barracuda are providing lots of fun action at the nearshore artificial reefs. Best bait is the red tube lure.

Offshore: The king mackerel bite is pretty good right now with best catches early in the morning or late in the evening. This should only get better as temperatures moderate into the fall. Live menhaden, cigar minnows and ballyhoo will catch these tasty speedsters. Mahi are also around from the 10 mile area out to 30 miles.

Gulfstream: The heat and very high water temps have slowed gulfstream fishing. Look for action to pick up fast when things cool down a bit.

Some of the best fishing of the year is still ahead of us and I cannot wait. It takes a while to get a new boat just like you want it and I think I have finally got that done...except for a few small things to be done this winter. So I am excited about fishing this fall and the large variety of fishes to be caught.
