Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rod-Man Report September 29, 2005

Hi Folks,

Fall fishing is arriving. We have had some great inshore outings this week with lots of red drum and flounder biting too. With the cool snap forecast for tomorrow look for the fish to get hungrier fast.

Now here's my report:

Inshore: Water temps have finally dropped below 80 and the reds have turned on. You can find them in the inlets, the creeks and the waterway. Large flounder are biting in the inlets and the cut...and don't forget the river. Best bait right now are good size finger mullet fished on a carolina rig. A few specks have shown up near the inlets.

Near Shore: Things have slowed a bit due primarily to some breezy conditions and "a change of season". As things calm down a bit look for gray trout at the near shore artificial and natural reefs. Spanish mackerel activity is winding down, but we may have a last run or two.

Offshore: King mackerel are moving closer to the beach for the boats that have been able to reach them. look in the 10 mile areas for the most production.

Gulfstream: Tuna season is here. Now if the wind would just lay!

Fall fishing, boat shows and fishing schools; all just around the corner. Hope to see you.

Sponsor's Corner: Gulp is on fire. The new saltwater Gulp by Pure Fishing (Berkley) is catching everything that swims. Check Bug-Em Bait for the original Ugly Bug and new for 2005, the offshore 16 to 32 oz. Ugly Bug. The Ugly Bug is what started Bug-Em Bait and it catches fish!
