Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report
The first few days of May have seen the billfish action slow a bit, the tuna have moved farther offshore (40 miles) but the DORADO, for whatever reason, have jumped it up considerably out around the 15-20 mile slot.
A trick I learned, (self-taught in Panama) got our first fish after only 5 minutes of coming upon a nice East-West trashline . Put my blue/wh/pink Yo-Zuri ¨Surface Cruiser¨out on the starboard rigger , flapping and dancing 5 waves back. WHAM !A beauty of a 35 -pounder came in high and hard , we all saw her comin´, and the day was started.
We had 9 very nice fish, 6 on the Yo-Zuri, until we ran into a school of spinner dolphin, changed lures, and hoped we´d struck Tuna Gold.
They never got excited though. We followed for awhile, but gave it up after an hour of sight-seeing.
Had only two sails up, a far cry from 10 days ago when they were ¨Like rice ¨everywhere you looked. Lost a sardine to the first one, but there was another trailer, and she took the sardine/circle hook rig and a classic corner of the mouth hookup had her dancin´in the afternoon sun.
Inshore, we´re waiting for a moon change before hitting the Corvina Hole and the ¨Gundersuun Hole¨. Locals , fishing at night , are not doing well. When the local panga fleet is having trouble, best to take a rest.
Weather is still good, with rains now lasting 1-2 hours in the middle of the night. Grass growing like crazy.
I´m offering a 15% discount from May 1 to Nov. 30, which includes the Aug/Sept. Marlin Bite.
Great op. to get that Big Mamu you´ve been dreaming about.
Good Fishing, WHEREVER YOU ARE!!! Capn Bob
