Panama - Boca Chica

Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama Offshore

The "Norte's" or north, offshore winds are keeping seas rough and fishing tough.

The areas around Isla Ladrones, the Secas Island chain, and over to Punta Burica get these very stiff winds about every day.

Even inside, in the estuary, it can blow up pretty nasty .

Just anchoring my boat off the beach at Pacific Bay Resort awhile back turned into one of those little "experiences" that keep things interesting here.

Had to board a small kayak that resembles a Nike sneaker, and as son as I left the leeward side of the boat, the wind flipped me over like a pancake. Thank goodness I had decided that my passport, cell phone, and wallet were safer on the boat than in my pocket.

No matter the winds, there are sails out there, not many tuna, and the water temps are making it tough too.

I believe APRIL and beyond will be a better bet, but I'll keep you posted on changes.

Costa Rica-Golfito to Punta Burica

Hot water and hot weather continue to make things interesting here.

We had a brief window of opportunity when we hosted FRANCESCO LOMBARDO and girlfriend FRANSESCA SACCHI last week for a 6 day tour.

The first day out , they got beat up pretty bad, especially since I had written them in Italy , telling them about our"virtually flat calm" waters. Lucky i added, "for the most part" to that !!!

It was slow, but we managed some very nice dorado in the 25 to 40 lb. range for the grill, and at least a sail a day for Francesco, including his first ever, which turned from a marlin to a sail at boatside.

The fish was so big that on the tackle it struck we had to chase it down twice to avoid being stripped !!

We were sure it was a small, maybe 200 lbs. , blue marlin. Turned into a beautiful sailfish of 180 lbs. !

Fishing improved over the next few days out, we raised more fish, and were able to live bait 3,4, and 3 more sails on the last day.

All but one were very big sails in the 150 to 170 lb. class.

We also had a day of non-stop yellowfin tuna action , on feathers, where we caught 20 small tunas , releasing all that weren't bleeding. Just enough for a nice dinner and some sashimi.

MARLIN are here and are taking big plastics on the flat lines. Sails will come to those lures in close, and we pitch a live sardine at them on another rod when we're sure it's not a blue or black marlin chasing.

We've got another rod for that !! Rigged bonito or a big mullet on a circle hook do the trick !!

We have fly anglers coming in day after tomorrow, then some writers from Italy, who've been here before.

Billfish are now out at about 26-8 miles off Mata Palo, but moving in every day. By Thursday or Friday of this week, they should be really close off the points.

Inshore, roosters and snappers are still biting well.

Snook are slow.

Write me at [email protected] for Panama info, and at [email protected] for Costa Rica info and booking.

GOOD FISHING, Wherever You Are !!! Capn Bob
