Panama - Boca Chica

Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama Offshore / Inshore

Reports from many corners of Panama are very exciting. This season was a strange one, but not the first of it's kind in the last few years.

Like a delayed reaction. Now , finally , it's exploding , and there is a LOT of action going on!!

The island chains that make up my principal fishing grounds are all doing well.

Isla Montuosa has been rock steady for us (it is a rock !). I can't remember a time when that area on a straight line from Isla Ladrones to Montuosa has not produced for us.

More and more amrlin enconters, still sailfish around, and ther big tunas are there. Soon the wahoo will be in force, but we had some blue runners taken the other day that couldn't have been in the jaws of any other fish. That's how fast they went when hit.

As I said in another forum, KEEP YOUR THUMB OFF THE SPOOL !!!!! We had hooks pulled, lines broken from that habit last week, losing some heavy fish.

During the last series of "small tides", we hit the estuary inside Boca Chica, and actually had more snapper than corvina, but did very well on both.

A 35 lb. cubera on popper from one of my favorite, albeit fickle, rocks off Isla Parida, was an epic battle. Beautiful fish. Yo-Zuri "surface cruiser" continuesto rule. Blue/white/pink or deep purple.

Many e-mals I get are from you guys who want to do some diving along with a fishing adventure.

Yes, I can arrange some excellent diving ops. out of Boca Chica, with professional dive masters and excellent equipment.

So, just let me know WHEN, HOW MANY DAYS FISHING, HOW MANY DIVING, AND HOW MANY PEOPLE.

After cast-netting a livewell full of sardines the other day, we went to a rock outside Isla Parida to see who was home. It was one of those days you dream about. The AFRICAN POMPANO were there in force, and we had a blast feeding them sardines with slip sinker rigs and just free-lining them. While the sardine was trying to figure out which way to escape, up comes a chrome rocket and boils the water in another awesome take.

Diichi circle hooks, 10/0, through the nose, and a length of 80 lb. fluorocarbon leader had them wild.

But after a while the SIERRA MACKERAL got 'wind' of the action, and we had to put up with THEM !

I HATE it when that happens !

Word from James Weiss in Cebaco Bay is that there are acres and acres of fish over there.

I've a friend with a lot and small house on Playa Venado , near there, and I'm setting up to trailer a boat down and fish the Frailles Rocks and other great fish haunts for a few days.

I'll let you all know what's happenin'.

Good Fishing, Wherever You Are !! Capn Bob
