Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report
Costa Rica--Golfito Offshore
Sr. Enrique Gomez and 9 year old nephew Nicolo had the day we all dream about this past Monday.
They are back in Valencia , Spain by now telling of their fishing adventures with us.
First day offshore had 4 sails raised, with two hooked up , but none to the boat. A very nice dorado of 40 lbs. made the day for Nicolo, as "the bestia" was the biggest fish he's caught in his life.
Uncle Enrique knows angling, and was far from disappointed with his day, even with the two long releases.
Then a day inshore with very good action on red, yellowtail, and cubera snapper, with jack crevalle rounding out a day that was proclaimed a success also.
The last day out had two more dorado in the same 40 lb. class, one filleted and the second released unharmed.
Then a beautiful sailfish , estimated at around 160 lbs. was battled and released, making the day , and trip for Enrique.
But the day was far from over.
Capt. Johnny Guerra and brother Ricardo ("The Blues Brother's") saw a fin coming behind a small Pakula sprocket on the port rigger, and Johnny sped the boat up , trying to provoke a strike from the follower.
Thinking it's little snack was trying to escape, the fish , thought to be a sail, slammed the lure and took off jumping. Then they could see it was a blue marlin of around 300 lbs. !!!
Enrique took the chair while Johnny maneuvered the boat and Ricardo expertly cleared the other lines.
When he started to bring in the huge Black Bart flatline lure, ANOTHER blue ate that and took off in the opposite direction. The first was on a Penn 30#, and this one took the lure on the 50# Shimano.
The first fish jumped itself into eternity, rolling up not 50 yds. from the boat.
As the boys took it onboard, they fought the other fish, again in the 300 lb. class, maybe a little bigger than the first one.
This one was released unharmed, Enrique said "No Mas", and the happy crew and anglers headed for the dock.
We alerted some of the poorer villagers on Playa Zancudo, and they arrived with their plastic bags to receive a chunk of marlin steak.
Happy New Year !!!!
Weather is superb, water is crystal clear blue, and all species are biting well.
More later,
Capn Bob
