Boca Chica - Saltwater Fishing Report
Virtualy ALL boats making the trip out to Isla Montuosa have been enjoying some great fishing for YELLOWFIN TUNA in the 100-200 lb. class. with a few making the 300 lb. mark.
Live bonitos and blue runners remain the best bait overall, but deep jigging and throwing large poppers in the middle of excited porpoise schools sometimes results in MORE hook-ups, and is much simpler than using live bait when it is scarce or finicky.
We had some mahi action , along with three very nice cubera snappers, off ISLA LADRONES recently.
The dorado were small but there was a nice bunch of them around an old log that held a lot of baitfish. We were able to cast spinning outfits rigged with plugs and bucktail jigs at them for some great fun and wild strikes.
John Hendricks had a 53 lb. CUBERA that almost took him over te side a couple of times, but he held on to keep that monster from cutting him off on the bottom. Took the cubera off the "Baja Ocho" number outside the Ladrones rocks, on a bonito chunk.
WAHOO are plentiful , and we've had good results trolling Marauder-style and rapala sub-surface plugs
around the islands, reefs, and structure around ISLA SECAS, and midway between there and Parida Island, usually in the afternoon when we're on the way home.
Weather has been rough , and wet, at times, but right now we're moving into "Little Summer", and conditions should improve.
MARLIN are around Montuosa , Ladrones, and of course the Hannibal Bank. I prefer Montuosa to the Bank, unless otherwise requested by clients that they'd like to run ove there. Less boat traffic at Montuosa.
Boca Chica Fishing Forecast:
Look for tuna to remain steady, with BLACK MARLIN improving every day.
WAHOO are plentiful, up to 100 lbs., and will be around until December, when the water warms and the cooling rain stops.
