Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report
Canyon Lake
Even though the lack of substantial rainfall has this lake gin clear, cooler weather is raising the thermocline and both largemouth, smallmouth and stripers are moving up with it. LARGEMOUTH are showing some inclination to begin their fall foraging. Top water activity is occurring in most of the major creeks with good fish branching off and following shad into and up smaller secondary feeder creeks and ditches. Early and late try a Berkley popper, Rat-L-Trap or 1/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbait in these areas where you see shad moving. Throughout the day work a Creme Devil's Tongue on a split shot or drop shot rig in 12'-18' inside of secondary points. In back of creeks, locate gravel flats and throw a wacky rigged Scoundrel worm. SMALLMOUTH remain positioned primarily in deep pockets in the lower end of the lake along deep water ledges. A Kapalia smoke/blue flake or copper flake twin tail grub, Devil's Tongue of small shad-type crankbait worked along and down ledges will take fish if you have patience.

LARGEMOUGH are adapting to the changing weather patterns and their movements into & out of brushpiles is evidence. Early morning bite (before daylight) is good along lighted boat docks with red shad MagWorms (by the Minnie Bucket). At daylight there is a narrow window of opportunity for a topwater bite on gray ghost Berkley poppers, Spit N Image or black/blue Terminator buzzbaits in 2'-5' of water. As the morning progresses switch to a plastic jerkbait, Ice Tea Scoundrel worm on a wacky rig or watermelon Creme Super Tube and fish them all 4'-8' deep along boat docks on breaklines. Once the sun is up fully, our go-to lure is a wacky rig or Super Tube worked in deep brushpiles along creek channels.
