Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

LAKE LBJ (Central Texas Hill Country)

A very early fall with much lower-than-normal temperatures and rain have kick-started the annual feeding binge of every species of game fish in LBJ. LARGEMOUTH: Virtually every angler I know will tell you there is nothing that excites them more than the excitement of a water spraying strike topwater strike. That is exactly what anglers using an 1/8 or 1/4 oz. silver/blue Terminator buzzbait are encountering here now. Working the Terminator over and through stump fields and laydowns in pockets or shorelines with 2'- 6'of water is producting fish in the 3 to 8 pound range, as are Grey Ghost Berkley poppers. No need to use the traditional fast-slow retreive right now. These fish are so aggressive they will "wake" just under the surface until they catch up to the lure. Now that may be right at the boat so be prepared and have your drag set accordingly. Also very productive are the 3" Lit'l Fishie Shad or Perch and white/blue flake plastic jerkbaits by the Minnie Bucket fished along rip rap and seawalls. Our clients are having great success on wateremelon or crawdad Creme Super Tubes, 1/4 oz. Curb's jigs and wacky rigged Scoundrel worms worked in brush piles in 6'-12'. To get in on some great largemouth, white bass and striper action call JR'S GUIDE SERVICE at (830) 833-5688 or e-mail: [email protected].

and ditches or channels are

Canyon Lake (30 minutes north of San Antonio, TX.)

This time of year Canyon Lake is noted for several things; e.g., very deep, gin clear water; a variety of structure; and bass, bass, bass. Gone is the irritation of inconsiderate recreational boaters, skiers and countless jet skis. Fishermen can now reclaim this lake with expectations of an unusually high success rate. Our very early fall weather has played a major role in this. LARGEMOUTH are returning to banklines with chunk rock, trees and stick ups where fishermen can find 2 to 5 pound fish using silver or silver/blue 1/8 or 1/4 oz. Terminator buzzbaits or 1/8 oz. white or silver Terminator spinnerbaits. Creme Scoundrel worms on wacky rigs and Super Tubes in tranluscent colors are producing over submerged trees along bluffs in the major creeks. As the water continues to cool, look for fish to move to the back of creeks following shad onto gravel flats clost to the channels. Work these areas with a 2" or 3" Lit'l Fishie Shad or Minnie Bucket plastic jerkbait. Also good is the new 2000 series Rat-L-Trap in Baby Bass. The deeper secondary points continue to hold some large bass. Berkley chrome/orange crankbaits are good in these situations.
