Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
November 10, 2000
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

LAKE BUCHANAN

Lake Buchanan has been rejuvinated by the great November rains. The lake level has come back up to over 1012' and water is in freshly covered grass and weeds. LARGEMOUTH are roaming along any clear water flats inside of the mudline in pockets and creeks. Work 2'-8' depths with a white Shootin' Shad plastic jerkbait, motor oil/red flake Creme Scoundrel worm or green/blue 1/8 or 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbait. No need to "run & gun" the entire lake. Fish these pockets as well as rock points with baby bass 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps and motor oil Creme Scremer worms. STRIPERS are working shad under birds in 12'-20' over humps and recently submerged humps. Drifting live bait or trolling bucktail jigs are the best bet, but be prepared for surface action at any time. LAKE LBJ

Currently the entire lake, from well above the Kingsland Bridge to Wirtz Dam is very muddy. However, the water is clearing slowly and should be fishable by the 15th. CATFISHING is extremely good. Yellow cats to almost 30 lbs are being taken on trotlines with live goldfish and perch. For information or a guided trip contact the oldest and largest FULLTIME, PROFESSIONAL guide service on LBJ; JR'S GUIDE SERVICE at (830) 833-5688 or email [email protected]. CANYON LAKE

Currently, Canyon Lake is almost 10' feet ABOVE pool. The Corps of Engineers have all of the baot ramps in their parks closed, but there are other ramps available. LARGEMOUTH is very good right now mainly because of the color that the flooded Guadalupe River has pushed into the lake. Bass are up in the recently flooded grass roaming flats in 2'-6'. Silver 1/8 oz. Terminator buzzbaits, blue/green Terminator spinnerbaits, white/blue flake Shootin' Shad plastic jerkbaits and 1 1/2" Lit'l Fishie Shad are the primary lure choices. Once the river returns to normal flow, work feeder creek points and stumpy flats with white/chartreuse Termiantor spinnerbaits, 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps and watermelon/chartreuse or Tequila Creme Scremer worms for BIG bass. From Nov. through April, fishing is the absolute best on Canyon, especially now that water levels are normal and the fish are up in recently flooded grass.
