Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

All lake conditions are ideal for prime springtime fishing for spawning largemouth and smallmouth. The majority of the Stripers and White bass have moved into and up the Guadalupe River but some are still holding at the mouth and are catchable vertically jigging 1/4 oz. Horizon Pirk Minnows and 2' Lit'l Fishie Shads. LARGEMOUTH are moving to spawing areas in 2'-8' of water and along creek channel breaklines in 4'-10'. The best producing lures for our clients have been Rat-L-Traps, 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, Devil's Tongues and pumpkin/char. Zilla lizards. SMALLMOUTH remain congregated over rock piles and submerged boulders in 3'-8' with 1/8 oz. ALL chartreuse Terminator spinnerbaits, Ice Tea Devil's Tongues or chartreuse 3" Creme Super Tubes producing best. LAKE BUCHANAN

LARGEMOUTH are fair to good around Garrett Island, Morgan or Beaver Creeks and the Apple Orchard in ditches and creeks using silver/blue or white/chart. 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, Rat-L-Traps, Devil's Tongues and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads. The ledges inside of secondary creek points are also holding fish. Crawfish crankbaits, Devil's Tongues and crawfish 3" Creme Super Tubes are good choices. STRIPERS are moving but still are not real cooperative. Drifting live bait between Morgan & Beaver Creeks is the most productive. Trolling is slow going. WHITE BASS just are waiting for the water temp. to warm up about 5 degrees before they begin the spawning run.
