Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

The spawn is over and all fish are in post-spawn patterns. LARGEMOUTH are working their out of secondary coves by way of channels. Work 6'-10' breaklines of gravel flats with special attention to brush or rock piles using 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads, 1/8 oz. "Tiny T" Terminator buzzbaits or their white spinnerbaits or 4" Scoundrel worms. SMALLMOUTH have moved away from their springtime shallow areas and back into 8'-15' of water. Chartreuse (Creme Lure's) 3" Super Tubes, chartreuse 1/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads should produce but don't expect quality fish in the 2-4 lb. range like our clients were taking up until now.

LAKE LBJ

We are in the post spawn stage of fishing now. For BLACK BASS we're using plastic jerkbaits, 1/8 & 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps and shallow running crankbaits. Expect the big fish bite to be early on 1/4 oz. watermelon Terminator jigs, 3" Super Tubes and Scoundrel worms worked directly & very slowly into brush piles in 12'-15'. CRAPPIE are also over brushpiles in the mouth of pockets and coves in 8'-12' of water. Get after them with chartreuse Tiny Tubes or white or chartreuse 1/32 oz. Curb's crappie jigs or minnows.

LAKE BUCHANAN

STRIPER fishing is good and getting progressively better drifting live bait or trolling mid lake areas. Look for top water activity around sloping points and target these fish with as ZARA SPOOK, 1 oz. chrome Rat-L-Trap or white bucktail jigs. Vertically jigging a Horizon Pirk Minnow is also producing. LARGEMOUTH are moving to points of coves and pockets and into brush piles along boat docks in 12' of water. Target brush with a wacky rigged Scoundrel worm, 1/4 oz. pumpkin or watermelon Terminator jig. Work points (very early) with a Terminator buzzbait or Devil's Tongue.
