Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

LARGEMOUTH have moved into a typical summertime pattern along deeper ledges. There is shortlived early shallow water action along chunk rock banklines in 4'-12' using white/chartreuse 1/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, plastic jerkbaits and 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps. As the sun gets higher move to shaded bluff ledges working 8'-15' with Devil's Tongues, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads and firetiger crankbaits or watermelon Scoundrel worms on secondary points. STRIPERS are holding over humps in 40' of water. Drifting live perch is taking a few fish each trip. LAKE LBJ

LBJ is living up to it's reputation as a summertime "numbers lake". Fishermen should be able to catch a lot of bass in the 14" to 18" class easily by fishing very early around rocky creek points using 1/8 oz. Terminator buzzbaits, 1/4 oz. Green Perch Terminator spinnerbaits, 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps (or other shallow running crankbaits). As the morning progresses switch to watermelon or Ice Tea Scoundrel worms, plastic jerkbaits or 3" (Creme Lure's) Super Tubes fishing them along the front on boat docks with 6'-12' of water. Bass in the 4 to 8 lb. class are feeding primarily very early and late along lake points with stumps and laydown. Watermelon Terminator jigs, buzzbaits/spinnerbaits and watermelon or Ice Tea Devil's Tongues, 5" watermelon lizards & plastic jerkbaits are all good choices. CHOKE CANYON RES.

LARGEMOUTH to over 10 lbs. are very good along main lake points, tank dams and grassy flats using 1/4 or 3/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, Terminator buzzbaits, Rat-L-Traps and Berkley topwater poppers. From Possum to 4 Fingers look for numbers of good fish on sloping points early with topwaters or moving lures, then work jigs or worms along grasslines and down tank dams.
