Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Water gin clear; 72 degrees; 910': LARGEMOUTH have moved onto chunk rock banklines and rock ledges. The topwater bite is VERY early and only last for the first hour of daylight along pockets of banklines in 4'-8' of water with laydowns and timber using 1/8 oz. Terminator "Tiny-T" buzzbaits, clear Rat-l-Tops or Pop R's. After full sunup work the same general area with an 1/8 or 1/4 oz. white or silver/blue Terminator, Chameleon Scoundrel worm or 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad. The water in the main lake is extremely clear, therefore, line size and color are important to attract the most strikes. STRIPERS are into their usual summertime routines, holding over submerged islands in 40'-60'. Drifting live bait is the best choice, but for those that like to work faster try vertically jigging a Horizon Pirk Minnow or burning a 1/2 oz. white/char. Curb's striper jig back to the boat. CRAPPIE are fair to good upriver in 12'-16' on chatreuse (Creme Lures) Tiny Tubes or white 1/32 oz. Curb's crappie jigs or live minnows. LAKE LBJ

Water clear; 71 degrees; 824.90'. LARGEMOUTH are just coming out of post-spawn period and getting back to regular activity levels roaming shallows in 3'-6' just before and at daylight. White/chartreuse Terminator spinnerbaits, Pop R's, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad and plastic jerkbaits are good for the first hour. After that switch to a watermelon Scoundrel worm, 3" (Creme Lure) Super Tube or Ice Tea or watermelon Devil's Tongue fished just over 8'-15 foot breaklines. WHITE BASS are schooling over gravel/sand flats on channel turns. For topwater action try clear Rat-L-Tops, 1/8 oz. Tiny Traps, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads or #3 Terminator In-Line Spinners. When the fish sound begin vertically jigging a Horizon Pirk Minnow a little deeper. CRAPPIE have moved onto brushpiles in 12'-16'. A 1/32 oz. chartreuse or pearl Tiny Tube, white Curb's crappie jig or minnows will work.
