Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Surface water temperatures above 80 degrees, heavy recreational boating traffic and windy conditions are making fishing difficult during the day in the main lake. Our night/early morning trips have been the most successful for our clients lately. We are working upriver mostly using 1/8 oz. black "Tiny-T" Terminator buzzbaits, black 1/4 oz. single bladed Terminator spinnerbaits and prop-type topwaters such as Rat-L-Tops across creek points and on stump flats on channel turns Expect to find fish in 4'-10' of water at night. During the day it's a whole different world. By the time the sun is over the horizon bass have moved in tight to the cover of laydowns and standing timber. Pitching watermelon/pepper 4" or 6" Disc Lizards (by Big Bite Baits www.bigbitebaits.com), watermelon Scoundrel worms on wacky rigs, white 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits or 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad will produce for the first hour. After that work a pumpkin/ chartreuse, pumpkin/red spider jig or Chameleon Scoundrel wom into thick cover in 8' +. LAKE LBJ

Our night trips have been very successful with clients boating 20-40 fish in a mixed bag during the trips. LARGEMOUTH will be at their most active at night. Work a 1/4 oz. black Terminator buzzbait or dark topwater across creek and rock points in 4'-10' of water. A black 3/8 oz. Terminator spinnerbait or red shad 7"-10" Scremer worm worked in brush piles is producing some good fish. Along boat docks try a 1/8 oz. "Tiny-T" buzzbait, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad or crankbait. We're catching a lot of crappie and white bass throwing 1/32 or 1/16 oz. white or chartreuse Curb's crappie jigs or the same color in Tiny Tubes. After daylight we're switching to a watermelon/pepper, pro blue or pumpkin Disc Worm or Disc Lizard by Big Bite Baits (See: www.bigbitebaits.com) or wacky rigged Ice Tea or watermelon Scoundrel worm. Also, try an Ice Tea or watermelon Devil's Tongue on a split shot rig and work it down breaklines into 8'-12'.
