Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

LAKE LBJ
Our clients are enjoying some great fishing on our night trips when it is most comfortable, with no buzzing recreational boaters and when the fish are most active. We have been boating 20-40 largemouth, white bass, crappie and striper up to 9 lbs. It really does not matter what end of the lake you are on, just that you approach the area very quietly and present the lures they want correctly. For bass 1/8 & 1/4 oz.
black Terminator buzzbaits or noisy prop-type topwaters
are producing good fish when worked across flats and creek points. Locate a good brushpile and slow roll a
black Terminator spinnerbait with a single Colorado or Oklahoma blade or slow down with a red shad Scremer worm or 6" red shad Disc Lizard (by Big Bite Baits at
www.bigbitebaits.com) Both of these have the texture
and action to attract the attention of largemouth in the dark. A 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad (by Creme Lures at
www.cremelure.com) or white Curb's crappie jigs will
boat plenty of fish for you. If you must fish after
sunup, you should be prepared to work 8'-12' breaklines
with 3" Super Tubes, watermelon/red Scoundrel worms,
pumpkin/char. 4" Disc Worms or Devil's Tongues on drop shot rigs. JR'S GUIDE SERVICE www.jrguideservice.com

CANYON LAKE
Largemouth are way into their summertime patterns, which on Canyon Lake means it's necessary to either fish at night or at least be on the water well before daylight. Working black "Tiny-T" buzzbaits or 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Traps along flats or over long sloping points is producing some fish, and so is slow rolling a 1/4 or 3/8 oz. black Terminator spinnerbait through tops of submerged trees on bluffs and down secondary creek channels in 12'-15'. Before daylight I'm switching to
a Devil's Tongue on a drop shot or split shot rig or Carolina rigging a pumpkin/pepper 4" Disc Lizard with the tail dipped in chartreuse and targeting humps and secondary creek points at mid lake. At the same time
watch for topwater activity and throw a 2" Lit'l Fishie
Shad, 1/4 oz. Rat-L-Trap or threadfin Berkley popper
or Spit N Image. STRIPERS are slow drifting live bait
or vertically jigging a 1/2 oz. Horizon Pirk Minnow or Curb's striper jig over humps in 50'-70' of water. White bass and crappie are being caught under what few lights there are on the lake using white Curb's crappie jigs and live minnows. LAKE BUCHANAN
Very early and late are the times to fish "Buc" right now. LARGEMOUTH are moving across flats with stumps and buckbrush near coves and creeks. 1/4 oz. Terminator
buzzbaits or their Silver Shad spinnerbaits, Pop R's,
2" Lit'l Fishie Shads and wacky rigged Scoundrel worms
are producing. During the day locate brush piles in 12'-20' and work a Carolina rigged watermelon/pepper
Disc Worm (Big Bite Baits - www.bigbitebaits.com) or a watermelon Scoundrel worm. Along ledges on bluffs target the 10'-15' range in the shade with crankbaits,
3" Super Tubes or pro blue Disc Worms or pumpkin twin tail grubs. On secondary creek points try drop shot rigs with a watermelon or Ice Tea Devil's Tongue. STRIPERS are moving along 24'-40' channel breaklines.
Drifting live bait is most productive.
