Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

LAKE BUCHANAN
Water clear; 84 degrees; 1817': Conditions are good for success but you must be on the water at night to find both STRIPERS and LARGEMOUTH at their most active.
Points of creeks and pockets in the lower end are where we are starting our night trips. Both stripers and largemouth are ganging up on baitfish in these areas.
Bass to 5 lbs. are in 5'-10'+. A black 1/4 Terminator
buzzbait, black single blade spinnerbait or prop-type topwater (like a Rat-L-Top) will produce. Just before daylight, change colors to a white 1/8 Tiny Buzz, silver shiner Terminator spinnerbait or 3" Lit'l Fishie Shad because this is the best time for activity.
Plastic jerkbaits, wacky rigged Scoundrel worms and Carolina rigged 4" or 6" watermelon/pepper Disc Worms
(www.bigbitebaits.com) worked deeper on points are all producing.
Expect STRIPER to come after shad at any time, but the action last longer before daylight. A 2" or 3" Lit'l Fishie Shad, 1/4 or 1/2 oz. 'Traps or dark Zara spooks
will all produce. After daylight you'll need to drift live bait in 30'-50' of water through the trees on the dam.
CANYON LAKE
Water "Gin" Clear; 83 degrees; 910':
This deep, rocky, clear lake is virtually impossible to
fish (& be successful on) because of water conditions and the irresponsible actions of recreational boaters.
Therefore, if you intend to fish Canyon Lake, do so between midnight and 8:00 AM. Even upriver is being overrun with buzzing jet skiers, but at least you will encounter fewer aggravations and have a better chance of catching fish.
On the main lake, we're taking our clients to deep water bluffs where they are slowrolling 3/8 oz. black
Terminator spinnerbaits through the tops of submerged trees. Another productive tactic has been working a 1/8 oz. black Tiny Buzz or 1/4 oz. black, single blade
Terminator through stickups in 5'-12' of water. Long
sloping lake points (what few there are)are worth checking out for activity before daylight. Rat-L-Traps,
Pop R's and Terminator buzzbaits or spinnerbaits and Lit'l Fishie Shads are good search baits.
If you have to fish during the day, perfect you deep water finesse techniques. Try Devil's Tongues on drop shot or split shot rigs or Carolina rigs with a pumpkin
or watermelon/pepper 4" Disc Worm worked down secondary points into 25' of water

LAKE LBJ
Water clear; 83 degrees; 824.85':
LARGEMOUTH are good at night, fair during the day. Between midnight and 7:30 AM our clients are doing best on shallow running crankbaits, black 1/8 oz. Tiny
buzz or Tiny-T Terminator spinnerbaits and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad worked across points of pockets and creeks.
In the lower end, target rip rap with a red shad 4" Disc Worm or 3" Super Tube. After daylight, locate brushpiles in 12'-15' and fish them slowly with wacky rigged watermelon Scoundrel worm, Watermelon Terminator
jig or Super Tube.
CRAPPIE are holding in 18' brushpiles. The best bet are minnows or chartreuse Curb's crappie jigs.
WHITE BASS are plentiful at night using 1/32 oz. white Curb's crappie jigs & 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads.
STRIPERS are fair in the shoals below Inks dam on Rat-L-Traps, Spooks, 3" Lit'l Fishie Shads and live perch.
CHANNEL CATFISH are almost impossible to keep off of a hook baited with Dougs Punch Bait, minnows, liver or worms, especially around baited holes in 10' of water anywhere on the lake.
