Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
June 29, 2001
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Water Gin Clear; 84.5 degrees; 909'+: LARGEMOUTH are good for the first hour of daylight in 3'-6' of water on clear Rat-L-Tops, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads and 1/8 oz. Terminator "Tiny Buzz" buzzbaits. The topwater action dies at 7:30 and we're moving our clients to bluff ledges and secondary creeks, or upriver.

On the ledges, inside of secondary points 15'-20' deep, work a watermelon or chartreuse Devil's Tongue (by Creme Lures www.cremelure.com) on a split shot or drop shot rig. Texas rigged watermelonseed 4" Disc Worms (www.bigbitebaits.com) are as good, especially for fishermen not comfortable with the new techniques. But I recommend that anyone fishing Canyon Lake on a regular basis get accustomed to split shot and drop shot rigs. This lake is a finesse fisherman's dream.

UPRIVER: Work standing timber or thick laydowns in 8'-12' with a june bug 4" Disc Worm, wacky rigged Chameleon or watermelon Scoundrel 4" or 6" worm, shallow running crankbaits and at daylight a white/char. 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbait.

LAKE LBJ

Night and early morning is the time to catch fish on any of the lakes on central Texas, right now.

BLACKS BASS are holding tight to stumps and laydowns on flats in 3'- 5' very early. A white/char. 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbait, silver/blue Terminator buzzbait are the best producers. Later work channels in 8'-12' with a wacky rigged Scoundrel worm, 4" wateremlon Disc Worms or a 4" Disc Lizard on a Carolina rig. If the bite is exceptionally slow, split shot rig a Devil's Tongue or 3" Super Tube and work rip rap on seawalls.

WHITE BASS:A are very good (15-30 fish per trip)along boat docks at night on 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads and white 1/32 oz. Curb's crappie jigs.

CRAPPIE: are good in limits over brushpiles in 18' of water on minnows.
