Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Gin clear water, surface temps of 85 degrees and an obscene number of irresponsible recreational boater is making for some tough, uncomfortable conditions for fishermen.

We're forced to be on the water and fishing long before daylight, using techniques unfamiliar to most of our clients; i.e., drop shot rigs, deep water Texas or Carolina rigs. While we are catching some quality largemouth from tops of sumberged treelines using black Terminator spinnerbaits, that is about the only technique the average weekend angler is familiar with and therefore, the day turns into a teching lesson which can become frustrating for both fishermen and guides.

Ledges in deep water (20'-30') is the thermocline and therefore, that is where the vast majority of the bass are located in Canyon Lake. Using an Ice Tea or junebug Devil's Tongue (www.cremelure.com) on drop shot rigs or Texas rigging a 4" Disc Worm (www.bigbitebiats.com) and working both VERY slowly down the ledges is the most productive method we have going. If you know of a good isolated hump with brush on it near a deeper channel fish it with a Carolina rigged 6" chartreuse/pepper Disc Lizard.

VERY productive night fishing. Largemouth to 5 lb. and limits of white bass and crappie are the result of using 1/32 oz. Curb's crappie jigs or 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads along lighted boat docks with 8'-12' of water under them.

LARGEMOUTH are good at daylight on 1/8 oz. Tiny Buzz (www.terminatorlures.com), wacky rigged watermelon oor Ice Tea Scoundrel worms (www.cremelure.com) and Texas rigged 4" Disc Worms (www.bigbitebaits.com). Work just above 8' breaklines or in shallow rip rap. Pitching a pumpkin 1/8 oz. Terminator jig or working a 1/8 oz white/char. Tiny-T spinnerbait along and under docks is also producing.
