Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files

Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Bass fishing is very good on Canyon Lakie for this time of year, for those willing to discard their old, tired techniques of beating the banks with topwaters and spinnerbaits all day long.

My clients are catching quality LARGE & SMALLMOUTH BASS from 18'-25' deep on split shot rigged Ice Tea and pumpkin Devil's Tongues, green pumpkin 4" Disc Worms and Ice Tea Scoundrel worms.

At night we're picking up some fish in the 3-7 lb. class slowrolling black Terminator spinnerbaits in, and working a black Tiny-Buzz (Terminator)over the tops of submerged treelines almost anywhere on the lake with sufficient water depth.

Very early a white Tiny-Buzz, clear Rat-L-Top and plastic jerkbaits are producing along flooded buckbrush in 4'-8', but only until about 7:00 AM.

Our clients are enjoying relatively good fishing (for all species and especially largemouth) IF they will follow our recommendation to join us on a night trip.

LARGEMOUTH in the 1 1/2 lb to 3 lb. class are very active under the cover of darkness along darkend boat docks using black 1/8 or 1/4 oz. Terminator buzzbaits, black Terminator spinnerbaits, with a single Colorado blade, shallow running crankbaits and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads. Some real quality bass are being boated on red shad 6" or 7" curtail worms, 6" Disc Worms & Ice Tea Scoundrel worms on wacky rigs.

WHITE BASS & CRAPPIE are very good at night and the first hour of daylight over brushpiles in 8'-18' of water on white or chartreuse Curb's crappie jigs & 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads.

STRIPERS are good to 30" during generation just below Inks Dam on 3" Lit'l Fishie Shads, chrome 'Traps and Zara Spooks. When they aren't generating try floating a live perch.

LAKE BUCHANAN

STRIPER are good to 34" with most fish in the 22"-28" class, drifting live bait in 25'-30' of water, trolling 1/2 - 1 oz. Curb's striper jigs with 6" plastic trailers or vertically jigging 1 oz. Horizon Pirk Minnows through schools. You WILL NOT find them everywhere, so you'll have to use your LCR some to locate either shad or the actual school.

LARGEMOUTH are fair in 12'-20' of water along ledges and main lake points. Ice Tea or watermelon Devil's Tongues on spilt shot rigs (Creme Lure Co. www.cremelure.com), pumpkin/char. or watermelon/green 4" Disc Worms (Big Bite Baits at www.bigbitebaits.com), Texas rigging one of the new "Heavy Tubes" (Creme Lures) are all productive.
