Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
July 25, 2001
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

LAKE LBJ

Our most successful fishing is still at night, primarily between 3:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Surface water temps. are above 86 degrees during the day. It takes a few hours of darkness to the water to cool down a couple of degrees, the shad to activate and fish to get going.

LARGEMOUTH to 4 1/2 lbs. are holding around brushpiles along docks in 8'-12' of water and roaming flats before and just at first light. At night, try a 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad (Creme lures www.cremelures.com), 6" Red Shad Disc Lizard (www.bigbitebaits.com) or 1/8 oz. black Tiny-Buzz (Terminator buzzbait) along the flats. At frist light try a clear Rat-L-Top (topwater by Rat-L-Trap), 2" 'croaker' colored Lit'l Fishie Shad or Golden Shiner 1/4 oz. Terminator along creek points. During the day, a pumpkin green 4" Disc Worm or Ice Tea Devil's Tongue will produce in boulders and rip rap in 12'+.

CANYON LAKE

LARMOUTH and SMALLMOUTH are receiving all of our attention right now.

These fish are only up shallow the first hour of daylight when you can catch them on plastic jerkbaits, Terminator spinnerbaits and clear Rat-L-Tops. As soon as the sun is up we're moving to shaded bluffs and working char. 4" Disc Worms (www.bigbitebaits.com) and Ice Tea Devil's Tongues. A DEEP diving crankbait like a Fat Free Shad fished on secondary points will sometimes produce.

STRIPERS are slow at night drifting live bait over 50' humps near the dam.

During the day work a Devil's Tongue on a drop shot rig or Carolina rig a 4" or 6" pumpkin/pepper Disc Lizard (www.bigbitebaits.com)in 12'-25' of water or wacky rig a watermelon Scoundrel worm on ledges.
