Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE

Water clear (9'-12' vis.); 81 degrees; 910' (+1'):

LARGEMOUTH are good early along flooded willows and buckbrush in 2'-6' of water using silver shad 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits; plastic jerkbaits and wacky rigged Scoundrel worms. Later, work along breaklines of secondary creek channels with, 2" Lit'l Fishie Shad, smoke/blue twin tail grubs and Rat-L-Traps for larger fish. The very back of these creeks are loaded with threadfin shad and small bass are really working on them. For schooling activity, try a 2' Lit'l Fishie Shad or 1/8 oz. Tiny-T spinnerbait.

STRIPER activity has improved only minimally. Live perch are still the best producer. However, there are a few fish being taken on white 1/8 oz. Curb's feathered "Ledge Jigs" and Pirk Minnows.

LAKE LBJ

Water clear; 80 degrees; 828.86': Black Bass are fair to good in numbers of 1 1/2 - 4 lb. fish mainly from the lower end around the point of Honeymoon Camp and Horseshoe Bay very early and under cloud cover using white or silver Bill Dance (Terminator) buzzbaits, SpitFire topwaters, Rat-L-Traps, white/chartreuse 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits and plastic jerkbaits.

Clients are successful pitching and skipping shad and bluegill colored 4" Super Heavy Tubes, watermelon/red 4" Scoundrel worms on wacky rigs and 4" watermelon Disc Worms under docks. Ice Tea or Junebug Devil's Tongues are producing lots of spotted bass from rip rap.

LAKE BUCHANAN

Water clear; 81 degrees; 1014.10': LARGEMOUTH are fair to good early and under cloud cover in 3'-8' of water over flats near main and secondary creek channels using 1/8 oz. Tiny-Buzz, silver shad 1/4 oz. Terminator spinnerbaits, Baby Bass 'Traps, plastic jerkbaits and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads. When the bite slows on motion baits switch to plastics such as watermelon 4" Super Heavy Tubes, 4" Junebug Disc Worms, Smokin' Green Devil's Tongue or a 1/4 oz. Terminator jig pitched to stumps, laydowns and brushpiles in 8'-12'.

STRIPERS are fair to good drifting live perch over 24' humps around Flag Island and Black Rock.

CHOKE CANYON RES.

Water clear lower-murky upper and in river; 81 degrees; 23' low:

Fishing is generally poor/slow for this lake. Very few big bass being taken for the past 6 weeks or so. Mostly 13 1/2" fish with the infrequent bass in the 2-5 lb. range being boated on plastic jerkbaits and 2" Lit'l Fishie Shads the first 1/2 hr. of daylight along grass. After that, Carolina rigging main lake grass beds is producing a fish or two.
