Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
August 25, 2004
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

CANYON LAKE: Water clear; 86 degrees; 909':

Largemouth are are good at first light in 12'-20' on mainlake points and submerged rock jetties on Carolina rigged green-pumpkin Snap Back creature baits (www.terminatorlures.com), Texas rigged Craw Tubes and

chrome/blue Frenzy divers (www.berkley-fishing.com).

Smallmouth are fair to good over rockpiles in 6'-20' on a Cisco crankbait (www.photonlures.com) silver/blue Sliding Weight Craw Fish, 4" pumpkin Slider worms on jigheads and 3/6 oz. pumpkin/brown Terminator finesse jigs w/Uncle Josh trailers. Between tournament fishing and guiding we are using A LOT of soft plastics right now. To save money we use a drop of Pro's Soft Bait

Glue www.prosoftbaitglue.com at the hook eye and to repair them when they rip and they will - tear up.

Stripers are very slow in 60'-80'. Suggestions are dragging a 1/2 oz. white Hyper Striper jig (www.kgenterprise.com) w/plastic trailer on downriggers, vertically jigging a 1 oz. Pirk Minnow and drifting & tight-lining live shad from Turkey Cove Point to the dam at night.

For area info. or to book a guided trip with the most experienced,Fulltime, professional guides on this lake contact JR's Guide Service (www.jrguideservice.com); call (830) 833-5688 or email [email protected].

Live bait, terminal tackle and information is available at Canyon Bait House 15605 Cranes Mill Rd, (830) 899-9747.

LAKE LBJ: Water stained; 84 degrees; 824.80':

Largemouth are good at night to 6 plus lbs. along rip rap and in stumpfields from Apple Head uplake on black 7/16 oz. Terminator tungsten spinnerbaits (www.terminatorlures.com), black Photon crankbaits (www.photonlures.com) and wacky rigged black/blue

flake plastic stickbaits. During the day, try pitching or skipping a Texas rigged watermelon Craw Tube or green-pumpkin plastic stickbait like a Whacky Stick (www.cremelure.com) under docks.

Striped Bass are good to 20" at night using Terminator In-Line spinners, croaker Lit'l Fishie Shads and 1/4 oz. white bucktails w/grub trailers.

White Bass are very good at night feeding over 10'-22' using 1-1/2" Lit'l Fishies and white 2" Gulp Minnow Grubs (www.berkley-fishing.com)on 1/8 oz. jigheads.

Crappie are good at night over brushpiles in 10'-15' on white Curb's crappie jigs and minnows.

**Our guided night trips are producing limits of white bass, several crappie and stripers for all anglers on each trip.** To book a guided fishing trip with the only fulltime professional guides fishing LBJ for over 40 years contact JR's Guide Service

LAKE BUCHANAN: Water murky upper-clear lower; 84 degrees; 1019':

Largemouth are fair to good 3'- 10' deep in clearest water in the creeks from Beaver to Black Rock using 3/8 oz. white/chartreuse Terminator spinnerbaits (www.terminatorlures.com) w/Oklahoma blades, green

Photon crankbaits (www.photonlures.com) and watermelon/red Snap Back jerkbaits along flooded bushes breaklines. During periods of bright sun, try working ledges and brushpiles close to deeper water

ditches, creeks and bluffs with whacky style Chameleon Scoundrel worms (www.cremelure.com) rigged on 2/0 or 3/0 "K" Whacky Hooks (www.falconlures.com) and Texas rigged watermelon/red Snap Back creature baits and weightless plastic stickbaits such as Whacky Sticks

(www.cremelure.com). You're probably using more soft plastics this time of year and going through bags of them each trip. To make them last and hold better, try some Pro's Soft Bait Glue(www.prosoftbaitglue.com)

at the hook eye to hold them in place. Also, to make repairs when they tear up. Much better than Super Glue.

Striped Bass are fair in 28'-35' trolling white/chart. Hyper Striper jigs (www.kgenterprise.com), jigging Pirk Minnows or tight-lining live bait over humps. You're probably using more soft plastics this time of

year and going through bags of them each trip.
