Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
November 16, 2005
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Canyon Lake: Water gin clear; 61 degrees; 3' Low

The fall migration and feeding frenzy is in full swing. Both largemouth and smallies have moved from deeper mainlake points into shallower water where they are aggressively chasing and gorging on baitfish in pockets at the back of bays and mouth of feeder creeks. The numbers of, and size of bass, coming to the boat have increased with the cool down in water temperatures. Likely areas are flats with stickups, stumps and laydowns in 2'-8' which are being used as ambush points.

Largemouth are very good to 6.5 lbs. working white Terminator "tungsten" spinnerbaits, Daiquiri JDC Skip-N-Pop topwater poppers, Texas rigged wtrmelon/chart. Big Pigs. A Daiquiri-Blk. JDC Gibroni* rigged wacky style on a 3/0 'K' Wacky Hook (from Falcon Lures) and pitching pump.-brn Terminator finesse jig are productive "follow-up" lures for those missed or short strikes in heavy cover.

Smallmouth are good to 4 lbs. and getting better since the water has cooled and stabilized in 4'-12' burning a 1/4 oz. Bleeding Shad Rat-L-Trap shallow, small profile white Terminator 'tungsten' spinnerbaits, root-beer JDC Strike Grub on jigheads & pumpkin Devil's Tongues on split shot rigs along ledges.

Stripers are improving - early A.M. activity on 3" Spoiler Shads, Zara Spook Juniors if you run across surface action and jigging silver or blue Pirk Minnows and white bucktails with plastic trailers when the topwater action subsides.

Lake Buchanan: Water clear; 60 degrees; 1013.80' (7' Low)

Dropping surface water temperatures have moving bass into creeks and pockets following baitfish. The upper end, from The Apple Orchard downlake to Beaver Creek, is producing the best numbers and larger fish by power fishing "motion baits". Slowing down and working back through productive areas with soft plastics like Snap Back or Big Pig creature baits and green-pumpkin Whacky Sticks are yielding even more bites.

Largemouth are good to very good on 2' - 5' flats & channel breaklines inside of secondary points of pockets and feeders using a white or silver 1/4 oz. Terminator spinner-bait, Rat-L-Traps, 2" Spoiler Shads and pumpkin JDC Skip-N-Pop topwater poppers.

Stripers are improving with activity early and late on Albino Snap Back jerkbaits, 3" Spoiler Shads and white bucktails with trailers. Look for action along main-lake points in 20'-40'from Shaw Island to the Lighthouse.

Lake LBJ: Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 824.95'

Water temps. have bass hyper-activate. Almost every-where you look, largemouth are present and very aggressive in 2'-4' along stationary boat docks, edges of seawall rip rap & around laydowns/stumpfields on flats inside of mainlake points using Bleeding Shad Rat-l-Traps, white Tiny-T buzzbaits, a small profile silver-blue Terminator 'tungsten' spinner-baits, cotton candy JDC Gibroni and/or white Whacky Sticks rigged on a 3/0 Whacky Hook by Falcon Lures. The small buzzbaits & JDC Skip-N-Pop topwater poppers are producing all day.

Stripers are fair in the shoals on Spoiler Shads & Terminator In-Line Spinners.
