Report for Canyon Lake & Lake LBJ, Texas

Capt. Jim Files
January 23, 2006
Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Canyon Lake: Water clear; 51 degrees; 906.64' (3.5' Low):

Fishing remains good and is only going to improve with larger fish of all species coming to the boat. For the most success, understand that your presentation must be slow. The fish are naturally lethargic in this cold water but the heavier fish will bite given time to get to the lure.

Largemouth are fair tight to submerged timber in 8'-15' on pumpkin Snap Back lizards, Ice Tea Scoundrel worms, wacky rigged cotton candy JDC Gibronis and black-brown hair jigs with split tail Devil's Tongues or pork strip for trailers.

Smallmouth are very good to 4+ lbs over and around rockpiles in 4'-8'on minnow-type suspending jerkbaits, along ledges down to 25' on, smoke 3" tubes, smoke JDC grubs and Smokin'-Green Devil's Tongues on drop shots.

Stripers improving around submerged humps and deep water creek points vertically jigging Pirk Minnows, swimming 2" Spoiler Shads and tightlining large minnows.

White Bass are improving in 20'-30' on sloping points jigging Pirk Minnows, Lit'l Georges and white grubs.

Lake LBJ: Water stained to clear; 51 degrees; 824.96' (full):

Be sure to slow down your presentation right now. Don't expect to catch numbers of fish. The fish that are being caught right now are quality.

Largemouth are fair in 6'-12' on brushpiles and laydowns pitching black-blue 1/4 oz. Terminator Pro Series jigs w/pork trailers, suspending crankbaits like 4" to 6" Rogues, 5" JDC Craws and Texas rigged watermelon-red Craw Tubes.

Stripers are good during generation early in the shoals below Inks Dam on Spoiler Shads, Bleeding Shad Rat-L-Traps and soft jerkbaits rigged on RED Bait Jerker Hooks and freelining live bait.

White Bass fair on channel turns down to 20' on Pirk Minnows, Tiny Traps and Lit'l Fishies.

Crappie are good under heated-enclosed boat docks on minnows.

Lake Buchanan: Water clear; 50 degrees; 1012.95' (7.5' low):

Largemouth, stripers and white bass are cooperating but the presentation must be a slow one. "Soak" that bait until you can't stand it any longer before you ever move it. A fast presentation will result in a lot fewer strikes.

Largemouth are fair in 8'-20' along secondary creek points and ledges slow-rolling black-red Terminator spinnerbaits, suspending Rogues, pumpkin Devils Tongues on drop shot rigs and 3 inch JDC Craws on jigheads.

Stripers are good to 28" in 22'-28' along the main river channel uplake from Beaver Creek jigging silver Pirk Minnows, swimming 2" Spoiler Shads, throwing Snap Back soft jerkbaits on RED Bait Jerker Hooks or Rattlin' Rogues and drifting live bait.

White Bass to 16" are beginning to move in 20'-30' on the mainlake creek points on 2" Spoiler Shads, jigging 1/8th oz. Tiny Traps, Pirk Minnows and trolling shad imitating crankbaits.
