Canyon Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Canyon Lake, TX.
Water levels at Canyon Lake continue to drop. Forecasts
are for no immediate relief in the way of significant rainfall. The upper Guadalupe River is very hazardous
with hardly any current (4 cfs inflow to the lake).
Gin clear water with clarity to as deep as 10' makes for
a tough daytime bite.
LARGEMOUTH BASS fishing is at it's very best at night and
very early mornings. Topwater action is on a black/blue
Terminator buzzbait (1/8 or 1/4 oz.), Berkley threadfin
shad popper or 1/4 oz. black Terminator spinnerbait
worked on the deep bluffs through and along the tree lines
are producing. At first light, plastic jerkbaits, small Frenzy lipless crankbaits or silver/blue 1/8 oz. Terminator
spinnerbaits are good choices working creek channel and
ditches (with at least 8'-12' of water)through stump fields. After sunup, a change in tactics is a must. Locate
mainlake and secondary points on channel turns and work a Creme Devil's Tongue on either a split shot or drop shot rig, chrome/blue Berkley crankbaits or Carolina rigs with
pumpkin 5 1/2" Zilla lizards down points.
SMALLMOUTH BASS are holding primarily in 18'-25' in pockets
with little or no structure that have ledges and main points. A smoke/blue Kapalia twin tail grub on 1/8 oz. jig heads, pumpkin Creme Devil's Tongue or threadfin shad Frenzy
crankbait worked parallel and down ledges will take some good fish.
STRIPED BASS are roaming the lower end and mainlake points throughout the night. Drifting live bait over points and submerged islands along the main channel are producing.
Vertically jigging 1 oz. Curb's striper jigs, Horizon Pirk Minnows or Duh!!!Team shad spoons will work. We are seeing more, but short-lived topwater activity and this will increase in duration as surface temps begin to cool. For
stripers on top be prepared with a Frenzy Topwater Walker, Spook or Rat-L-Trap. Long casts are imperative because getting a boat in too close will scatter the shad and stripers.
