Lake Ray Roberts - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Ray Roberts is 5 inches below normal level and water temperature is 80 to 86. The water color has really cleared in the past couple weeks as it has warmed up quickly and is clear to lightly stained. Fishing today was really different from a few days ago. The deep bite was almost non existent and we caught most of the limits we put in the box on top schooling. It took some boat riding around the lake to find fish but was able to pretty much stay on schooling fish all morning. June is a transition month for sand bass as the fish move from the deep water holes to surface feeding for the summer and can be the most challenging time to catch a bunch of fish. Some of the schools were sporadic and hard to get to which is the norm for early summertime on Ray Roberts but by moving around and looking we were able to find schools that were more cooperative. Fish are feeding on this years shad hatch and the bait is tiny so a rooster tail or clear tiny torpedoe should work. We catch all our schooling fish on the "Floatin Thing" that I make. We caught the deep fish on a Cotton Cordell CC Spoon 3/4 oz. chrome color with a Flies-By-Night chartreuse fly tied 14 inches above the spoon.
