Lake Ray Roberts - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report

June 29, 2007 Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report Lake Ray Roberts is still 6.42 feet above normal level and all boat ramps are still closed as well as most day use areas around the state parks. Water is being released at 1008 cfs at the present time and at that rate it will be September before the lake facilities are opened back up. I hope I am wrong on my prediction of when the State Parks open back up but even after the lake level gets down to where the facilities are usable there will be a period of time they will let the asphalt parking lots dry before allowing vehicles on them. The only boats getting on the lake are people who have a slip at the marina. They do have some uncovered slips they rent for $10.00 a day with a 3 day minimum to allow people access to the lake. Bass fishing has been good the last 2 weeks with the fish still using the flooded vegetation for cover. We are catching them in 4 to 8 feet of water starting with topwaters early and then going to small white spinner baits and light weight finesse worms. Bass are starting to school in some areas with most of these fish being small. The early morning bite has been the best but fish will still hit the spinner baits and worms up in the day. Worms working the best have been Yum Houdini 4.75 in., in junebug and sourgrape color. Sand bass fishing has picked up in the last week with some good schooling action on the flats from the marina to the west end of the dam. The schooling has been the best from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Any small topwaters or crank baits will catch these schooling sand bass when they are up on top. We have also had good success catching them when they go down using Cotton Cordell CC spoons with a Flies-By-Night jig tied about a foot above the spoon. The sand bass are on the small side right now with lots of them just under 10 inches with some good ones mixed in. 4 of the last 5 days on the lake they schooled strong for an hour or 2 and thursday it was all afternoon. Then friday they did not school at all, guess thats why we call it fishing and not catching. Have fun fishing, Tim
