Lake Ray Roberts Fishing Report

Lake Ray Roberts is a foot and a half over normal pool and water is being released at 662 cfs. Water temperatures are 78 to 82 and the water color is fairly clear everywhere we have been on the lake lately. It is fall in North Texas, even though on the 95 degree afternoons it may not feel like it, and the fishing is really good right now. Largemouth bass are in shallow water around vegetation and have been pretty active all day long. Of course early and late has been best but mid day is producing fish as well. There is still 4 to 10 inch bass all over the lake in the shallow grass and to catch a bunch of fish you can use small crankbaits or a grub on a jighead to have non stop action and an occasional bigger fish. To catch better size fish we have been using topwaters early and late, with Pop-R's and Super Spook Jr's both working well, and soft plastics all day long. Light weight jighead, T-Rig or split shot rigs have all been going good for us in the shallow vegetation. Junebug, sourgrape and watermelon colors have all been working using Yum Dingers 4" and Houdini worms 4.75" most of the time. Sand bass have stopped schooling under the birds in the last week are showing up on the deep structure they will use from now til May. Some days it has taken a lot of looking with electronics to find fish that are active. As the water cools down we will have less looking and more catching , yesterday we were on a big school of fish on a drop off in 30 to 35 and caught them on every drop for over an hour with many doubles. We are still catching most of our sand bass on Cotton Cordell CC Spoons chrome 3/4 oz. with a Flies-By-Night jig tied 14" above the spoon. Fall is a great time to be on the water and October is looking like it will be very good fishing for bass and sand bass.
