HEAVY FLY CATEGORY
Following the wishes of a strong majority of members, the IGFA trustees rejected the concept of creating a new and separate world record division for flyfishers. IGFA had received petitions to create a separate record category to create using three-feet long, 30-lb tippet, rod harnesses and flying gaffs. The allowed species were to include marlin, sailfish, tuna, tarpon and sharks. A worldwide survey of fly anglers was conducted over several month by IGFA with an overwhelming majority of participants opposed to the idea. Those not in favor of easing the rules for fly rod records included many of the best known names in the world of fir fishing. Included were several anglers who currently target large game fish on fly for world records. They enjoy the extreme challenge of capturing marlin and the other largest game fish on tackle that requires the utmost skill to be successful.
IGFA maintains more than 7,000 records in salt and fresh water including all-tackle, line classes, fly, plus junior records and state freshwater line class records.

Do feel this was the correct decision?

I would like to hear your opinions for and against the “Heavy” fly category.

Personally, I feel they made the right decision. Tackle and equipment advances have already changed the face of blue water fly fishing – no need to further bastardize the sport.

FWIW, I agree with you. To me, that facet of flyfishing is the extreme and should remain so.

Fly fishing is not about setting world records. If it was, than a fish should be doubled in weight and size everytime you catch one on a fly and not a mammoth rod!

yeah sure, but everyone knows you smell at fishing anyways Douglas, so flyfishing records are waaaayyy important .
