The Grove Slam! - Million Dollar Cash Prize!!!

Postby RudyGomez » Thu Apr 05, 2012 9:27 pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE GROVE SLAM! FISHING TOURNAMENT SETS SAIL WITH A MILLION DOLLAR CASH PRIZE ON MAY 3-5, 2012

MIAMI (April 5, 2012) - The Eleventh Annual Grove SLAM!, known for being one of the most unique three-day events in the fishing world has added to its lore a “Million Dollar Mahi”. Scheduled for May 3-5, 2012 in Coconut Grove, the tournament will feature a variety of events including a Luau, race day and the big competition, culminating on the third day, where a field of anglers will cast for cash prizes including the top prize of a $1,000,000.

Two weeks prior to the event, tournament organizers will catch and tag ten Mahi-mahi with an ID tag worth an additional $1,000, if caught by The Grove Slam! participants. They will release all ten back in the waters, but not before giving one of them a very special tag worth a lot more. Anyone from the tournament who catches that one Mahi-mahi will win $1,000,000 in a one-time cash pay-out. Due to space restrictions and safety concerns, organizers are limiting the tournament to the first 200 registered boats.

With open bar, free food, boat wash girls and a bikini contest, it’s no wonder why The Grove Slam! has become a crowd favorite. The tournament site seems more like a festival than a fishing tournament. Sponsors line the site showing off the newest Mercury motors and Sea Vee boats. Several Bacardi bars dot the perimeter with Presidente beer tubs in between. More sponsors from national and local companies fill in the rest of the space. Pegged in the past by former fishing teams as the “world’s funnest fishing tournament”, participants would have to agree that this year’s event is no laughing matter.

“People are there to get free swag, drink, eat and be seen, but with the million dollar bounty, teams have never been more serious about fishing these waters,” says Tony Albelo, creator of The Grove Slam! It has built a cult-like following with teams coming from as far away as New York and draws between 100-200 boats each year with over 1,000 anglers and twice the spectators. Last year’s top team took home close to $25,000.00. This year, there will be over $35,000 in guaranteed cash prizes in addition to the million dollar prize.

Boats will head out the morning of May 5th at 7:00 a.m. In order to qualify for cash prizes, anglers will need to weigh-in by 5:00 pm that day. Winners will be announced starting at 5:30 pm. The team with the heaviest combined weight of five fish is declared the winner. Following the ceremony, teams and spectators are treated to a bikini contest and music by DJ Laz, formerly of Power 96.
