Child Ambassadors Named
Bring Awareness to Child Bereavement & “Forgotten Grievers”

16th Annual Hospice Horizons Fishing Tournament

June 09, 2015 West Palm Beach, Florida — Hospice today named the Child Ambassadors for its 16th Annual Hospice Horizons Fishing Tournament, taking place June 20, 2015, at the Riviera Beach Marina. Ten year-old Brian Steigerwald and 14-year-old Abby Gafter each have experienced the loss of a loved one and benefited from Hospice’s children bereavement services. The Horizons Child Ambassadors bring critically needed awareness to children’s bereavement and the services Hospice provides children and their caregivers.

The Ambassadors shared their personal stories in hopes of helping other children and their families. Asked what advice he’d give other children, Brian Steigerwald comments, “I would tell them it’s okay to tell people about it.” Abby Gafter addressed the role Hospice child bereavement services played in her life following the loss of her Great Uncle. “It was so helpful to meet other kids who were just like me. I became good friends with a girl at camp who I keep in touch with all the time. We support each other and remind each other of what Hospice taught us. Our loss doesn’t have to bring us down. We can be what our loved ones would want us to be. We can be happy.”

The Catch One for the Kids theme highlights the opportunities available for grieving children in our community through hospice. Greg Leach, President of Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation and Hospice by the Sea Foundation, comments, “Children grieve differently, which is the best reason to call attention to the resources that are available to them.” Hospice bereavement services in Palm Beach and Broward County empower and equip surviving family members, educators and caregivers to shepherd children through their grief walk. Purpose-designed programming presents a variety of innovative strategies to support grieving children.

The day of the tournament, Hospice Horizons Child Ambassadors Brian Steigerwald and Abby Gafter will share their stories and encourage participating anglers. They are living reminders of what the tournament is about and the people it ultimately helps Hospice to serve.
