2011 Saltwater Slam Just 1 Week Away!
The second tournament in the 3-leg Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit is the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam held out of Hillsboro Inlet on the weekend of June 11th.
Last year’s biggest attraction—the Kay Dee Dubya Jackpot, won Team Rebound a total of $99,025 in the Saltwater Showdown. The KDW Jackpot returns again this year and is expected to exceed $10,000 at the Saltwater Slam tournament on June 11th.
Tournament organizers have added a new prize category for the Slam titled ‘Pick 3.’ The Pick 3 is an optional entry category that is similar to the Kay Dee Dubya, but with a twist. This new category targets three species of fish, but which three you may ask? The answer to that question comes on the morning of the tournament. The names of 5 target species (Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Tuna and Cobia) are placed in a sealed container on the morning of the tournament. The tournament committee will ‘Pick 3’ of the 5 eligible species from the sealed container. The three that are chosen will be the 3 target species in the Pick 3 for that day. Also like the KDW, if there is no winner, the purse rolls over into the next PBSC tournament where the process will start all over again. The ‘Pick 3’ category was a big hit during last month’s Saltwater Shootout where the 3 chosen fish were kingfish, dolphin and cobia and Team Snake Dancer took home the $4,320 pot for catching the winning combo.
The Slam has earned a solid reputation for rewarding both quantity and quality in its prize categories. There is a team division which pays to 15 places, 1st place is worth $7,500 for the heaviest combined weight of the eligible species (Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Blackfin Tuna & Cobia). Teams can weigh a maximum of 4 fish per species, no more than 10 fish total per boat. Or you can focus your efforts on catching one big fish. Ron Mitchell’s Bandit team earned over $25,500 at the 2010 Slam for finishing 2nd place overall and catching the heaviest fish—a 53.95 pound Kingfish--of the tournament.
If you consider yourself an average angler, the Slam has a division that is right down your alley called the ‘Average Joe’ division. Teams that have placed inside the top 8 of previous PBSC tournaments are not eligible, nor are teams with members who have earned part or all of their living charter fishing in South Florida within the past 10 years. This division pays 5 places with 1st place paying $2,000. An optional entry category is also available for Average Joe Teams, allowing novice teams to compete against their own skill level for more prize money.
The Southern Kingfish Association’s affiliation with the Slam continues and will be a qualifying event for Division 10. With exclusive prize categories for SKA members only, this affiliation is sure to attract several new teams from around the state. Teams that are not currently SKA members can register online at http://www.fishska.com. The SKA will also be present at the Slam kickoff party for teams that would like to register to become a member. SKA membership is not required to fish the Slam tournament, only to be eligible for the bonus SKA prize divisions.
The Saltwater Slam will have plenty to offer kids as well, beginning with prize categories for Junior and PeeWee anglers. If you don’t have a boat, but would love to introduce your kids to fishing, tournament organizers and the IGFA have combined their efforts to offer a FREE fishing clinic for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. The clinic will be held during the kickoff party on June 9th from 6pm to 8pm and is limited to 30 kids. Each youngster will receive a free rod & reel combo compliments of the Fish Florida Tag Agency. On Saturday, June 11th, the kids that participate in the clinic will be invited on a free fishing trip aboard the Helen S drift boat to put their new techniques into practice. Mom and Dad are welcome to join their children on the boat as well. Parents that would like to sign their children up for the clinic should call the tournament office at 954-725-4010.
Teams in the Slam will also have their chance to win a brand new 29’ SeaVee boat valued at over $130,000! The kickoff party is Thursday, June 9th from 6-10pm at the Pompano Beach Civic Center – 1801 NE 6th Street, Pompano Beach, 33060. Activities include live music, food, drinks, silent auction, raffles and more! Entry fee in the Saltwater Slam is $475 per boat after June 1st and includes all anglers. If you are unable to fish but want to see some big fish hung on the scales, stop by for the weigh-in on Saturday afternoon from 4 to 7pm at Hillsboro Inlet Park in Pompano Beach. The park is located at 2700 N Ocean Blvd, Pompano Beach, 33062. To register for the Slam log on to http://www.saltwaterslam.com or call 954-725-4010.
