Ester and Bodan chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team for a private deep sea charter boat sport fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale, FL aboard the Happy Day Today. As they boarded the boat, they were greeted by Captain Zsak and mate, Dave, from the Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat Team.

We started the charter catching live bait called Bullet Bonitas, and we used small lures to catch them. The baitfish migrates through the south Florida area during fall and winter and can be found migrating on and around structures. Within the first 15 minutes of the charter, we already had 7 to 8 of the live baits. Now it’s off to put the live baits back out using a wire rig with stingers hooked in the tail of the bait.

We started live bait fishing in 150 feet of water approximately 1.8 miles from the Fort Lauderdale shore and angled the boat and baits offshore out to 500 feet of water. This is a good depth and area targeting pelagic species that channel through this depth. We fished with 3 surface live baits and one deep down rigger live bait. All of a sudden on the high line surface bait, we had a huge explosion, and the line started ripping off the reel. We had a nice one on with Ester as the angler. This fish gave us what we call death circles and so we knew it had to be a Tuna. After a nice fight, a big Black Fin Tuna popped up. The first mate grabbed the gaff, stroked the fish and the 25 lb+ Tuna was in the box.

We went back to live bait fishing with the Bullets north of Fort Lauderdale. I slow-trolled over a sunken ship wreck, and it didn’t take long before the baits started getting nervous. A bait gets nervous when there’s a large predator lurking below stalking the live bait. Suddenly, all three lines came ripping out of the rigger clips - one came off right away and we had two big ones on the line. Both Ester and Bodan started fighting their fish. Both fish gave us big runs pulling off a lot of drag, taking in line and then giving it back, gaining a little at a time. We were using light tackle with 30 lb. main line. Ester’s fish was the first to pop up, and it was a 30 lb. Wahoo. The first mate gaffed the Wahoo and put him in the box. Next, Bodan’s fish was along the side of the boat, and the first mate stroked the fish in the head and over the covering board into the box

After a great charter, it was time to head back to our mooring location off the Fort Lauderdale Beach. The happy anglers retired into the a/c salon watching the plasma TV and enjoying the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
