Spring Fishing

Oh, we have had our cold snaps but they have been short lived and returning to the 80’s has been the norm. I am not bragging, just saying…
This time of year we are switching from trolling to more fishing with live bait. Goggle Eyes in the kites for Sailfish, Dolphin, and some other large creatures. Livies for wreck and deep reef fishing as well as some of the shallow reefs and wrecks. Trolling can still produce bites for certain fish, but the live bait gets the bigger fish.
Scattered Sailfish are being seen right now. We do catch these year-round but they will slow down some for a month or so. Migrating south to breed, they will soon be passing by again on their way north.
Large Dolphin, or Mahi-mahi, are also around from time to time. They are highly motivated when presented with a live bait. Kite fishing or dragging them from the riggers leads to an exciting bite, the look like an attack sub coming for a bait on the surface.
Large game sharks are also coming into our area. Tigers, Hammerheads, Bull, and Duskys are all possible as are some other species. Most of these are protected by state and federal laws so it is strictly a catch and release type thing. But the fight? Not much puts up a better fight, that’s for sure.
No matter what you hope to catch, there is action to be found here off the coast of Fort Lauderdale in the winter. And it is a lot warmer here than in most of the country. You can’t catch them sitting on land so come join us, won’t you?
