Panama / Costa Rica Report

The YELLOW FIN tuna bite continues virtually wide open around Isla Montuosa and the Hannibal Bank area of Coiba. Tuna to over 300 lbs. are being taken, many in the 100-200 lb. class. Real arm-breakers.
Big poppers burned across the surface with sturdy spin rod/reel combo is the ticket to some amazing strikes. Heavy butterfly jigs also take some very big tunas.
Look for BLUE and BLACK MARLIN around the tuna schools. Live,slow-trolled small tuna or bonito , rigged with circle hooks on their noses, will take the marlin, big tunas, and the occasional SAILFISH. Sails have been improving, but most anglers are transfixed on the tuna , with marlin actually a second target choice!
DORADO(mahi) are in better numbers , and should increase in both size and frequency in the months ahead.
Isla Ladrones, Islas Secas, Jicaron are all excellent spots for BIG CUBERA SNAPPER, ROOSTERFISH, GROUPER, and many other inshore species.
Fishing for all species will remain excellent, as water temps. fall a bit, after a very hot February.
August/September will see BLACK MARLIN and a few BLUES on the feed; it's an excellent time to get that big marlin of your angling dreams!
COSTA RICA:
Out of Zancudo Beach, (Golfito area) all boats are having great sailfishing, and the tunas are staying around. DORADO (MAHI) are increasing in both size and numbers.
Inshore, SNAPPER, SNOOK, ROOSTERFISH, GROUPER, and many others all remain excellent. After Easter, inshore fishing for big corvina(sea bass), snook, and snapper will be a hot ticket.
August/September offers the best shot of the year at that BIG MARLIN you've always wanted. That's the time! They will be close, and plentiful. 3-4 hookups a day is not uncommon. releases? That's a different chapter.
