Islamorada Florida Keys Fishing Backcountry Report, 12/19/10

Well we had a tremendously cold week here in the Florida Keys. We reached record lows, one night getting down to 39 degrees! This really chilled the water in the bay and gulf slowing things down back there. Fortunately the redfish and black drum don't mind the cold weather. Capt. Jim Willcox, Capt. Richard Stanczyk, and Capt. John Johansen reported catching tons of puppy drum in the deeper channels and runoffs in the east cape and flamingo area of the everglades. Capt. John had some larger black drum up to 15 lbs yesterday as well. A handful of snook in those areas too if you can get them to bite. Live shrimp on jigs trolled SLOWLY on the bottom, or just left on the bottom was the key here. The seatrout started biting again finally yesterday morning as the temperatures had been on the rise. Capt. Jim Willcox said they caught over 100 trout!
