Boca Grande Fishing Report
10/27/03

I have to emphasize how important the weather and tides are to fishing. The same weather system brought both poor and excellent fishing this week. Here's how that happened.

On Tuesday evening a moderately weak cold front moved over us and brought us a beautiful day. Clear skies, bright sun, light winds and high barometric pressure. The fish were less than excited about this and refused to bite well even though we could see them working several areas. Our friends Wendall and Mary Huff had a slow day with just a few small snook and seatrout. That was Wednesday.

The tail end of this front passed on Saturday evening and as it was leaving the Mangrove Coast Flyfishers held their outing in the harbor. The sky was getting cloudy and the wind blew at 15 to 20 all day. A strong moon made for strong tide and moved the bait all over the place. The fish followed. We were joined by some friends from the Tenn. Valley FF club, Dick & Kerri Curtis and Peter & Michele Lami. In the course of the day, the 14 anglers caught over 200 seatrout, (Dick caught at least 25 in one spot), dozens of ladyfish, more than a dozen flounder, a few snook and a dozen or so redfish. Greg Huffman of Sarasota caught four reds up to 28 inches. And our 15 year old new angler, Keith, caught his first redfish on a fly. Just a fantastic day for everyone.

So pick your days carefully and go fishing. The tides look good and the predicted warm weather for this week should prove productive. Give Jill a call at 941-923-6095 for reservations.

Tight Lines,
Pete
