Tampa Bay Area
Fishing Report
Captain Charles Walker
4/6/03
Thank goodness the last cold front cooled the water back down to 70 degrees. The fish are biting like crazy. Lots of grouper, mangrove snapper, king and Spanish mackerel are in the area right now. Of course we have a few days now of high temperatures again, well above normal for the season, so we’ll have to wait and see how the next week or so pans out for fishing. I have no doubt it will be great, as long as the weather lets us go fishing.
On to the bait house reports:
Ruskin Bait and Tackle - 813-641-2325 – Snook are picking up more and more.
Plenty of reds and trout are biting well. Some nice cobia have been caught this week and plenty of Spanish mackerel are being brought in. Some real nice grouper are being trolled up in the channel on a regular basis.
Buddy’s Bait and Tackle on the Courteney Campbell Causeway in Tampa - 813-287-1026 – Some nice trout and reds are being caught around the big bridge on large live shrimp. Snook are biting at the flood gates. High tide is the best time to fish. Spanish are being caught all over the Bay right now and shrimp on light tackle works for them as well as spoons.
Trappman’s Bait and Tackle on Gandy Blvd in St. Petersburg - 727-579-1414- Pompano are biting like crazy at the bridge on Doc’s Goofy Jigs. Some nice mackerel are biting on the incoming tide. Reds are biting well at Weedon Island and around the Fourth St. Bridge.
Don’s Dock on Madeira Beach - 727-391-3223- Lots of king and Spanish mackerel are coming in. Grouper and mangrove snapper are being caught from thirty feet on out on both live and frozen bait. Reds and trout are biting well around the residential docks inside the Pass.
Pass-a-Grille Bait and Tackle on St. Pete Beach - 727-360-6606- A few sheepshead are still being caught around the seawall. Spanish mackerel are thick inside the pass and off our gas dock. Our offshore boats are bringing in kings, grouper and mangrove snapper.
The Skyway Fishing Pier - 727-865-0668 and the south Skyway - 941-729-0117- Spanish mackerel and silver trout are the biggest catches this week. One of our anglers caught a 24 inch grouper on a GotCha Plug this week which was a real surprise.

Folks, feel free to call any of the places in my report for more information, and be sure to tell them that you read about the fishing in their area in Capt. Charlie’s fishing report on the Internet.
