This past week was pretty much a blow-out due to the coldest front of the year settling in the West coast of Florida. The key to catching fish inshore was to position your boat in canals that offered the most protection from the wind. I have to give credit to the fish too, as they also knew which canals to hide in.
There are some nice Seatrout to be caught, with the biggest ones tipping the scales at 4 pounds. This is the time of the year that you may find one over 5 pounds, though.
There are many jumbo-sized Ladyfish in the same area, sometimes fooling the angler into thinking a Snook is at the end of the line based on their strong runs.
One of the most overlooked species found in these canals is Sheepshead. Harder to catch than most fish, they are fine table fare and worth trying for. By downsizing out hooks and bait, my clients found 2 Sheepies willing to go home for dinner that blustery day.
